30 years with Northamptonshire Police Force
Mick’s career began with the Northamptonshire Police Force, where he spent an impressive 30 years in various key roles, contributing to public safety in profound and varied ways. His tenure from July 1974 to July 2004 saw him take on responsibilities as a Community Officer, Investigator, Dog Handler (12 years), Tactical Firearms Team member, and more. This experience laid a strong foundation, equipping Mick with a comprehensive understanding of operational response, tactical planning, and community engagement.
In his early years, Mick excelled in frontline duties such as community policing and driving emergency response vehicles. His role as a Dog Handler on the Tactical Firearms Team, where he partnered with trained dogs for high-stakes operations, exemplifies his ability to handle complex, high-pressure situations. Working in Surveillance and Operational Support, Mick built a reputation as a skilled observer and responder, conducting urban and rural surveillance operations that demanded strategic and practical expertise. Mick’s commitment to these roles highlights the versatility and resilience required in law enforcement, attributes that continue to serve him in his present role at CMG.
Transitioning to Private Sector
After retiring from the police force, Mick channelled his skills into the private sector, where he worked with community safety initiatives designed to protect businesses from crime. As the Retail Crime Initiative Coordinator for Corby Borough Council’s CORBIAC (Corby Retail Business Initiative Against Crime), Mick established programmes to help local retailers manage crime risks collaboratively. His role centred on setting up an intelligence-sharing network, enabling businesses to share images and data on offenders across the retail community, a step that contributed significantly to local security.
Through his work with CORBIAC, Mick led a new wave of proactive business crime prevention, earning him a National “Safer Business Award” from the Home Office-funded Action Against Business Crime Initiative. This recognition underscored his ability to drive impactful, community-oriented initiatives—an approach he continues to champion in his compliance work at CMG.
Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour with Leicestershire Police
In January 2006, Mick took on the role of Community Investigator with the Leicestershire Police, where he addressed the roots of anti-social behaviour through close engagement with community stakeholders. Tasked with problem-solving in areas facing high rates of recurring disturbances, Mick utilised his understanding of community dynamics to identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions. Collaborating with local agencies, including youth services, housing authorities, and probation services, he was able to mitigate problems at the source, improving quality of life and reducing tensions.
This position also involved forming preventative strategies alongside residents and stakeholders, fostering a collaborative approach vital in modern security management. Mick’s tenure with Leicestershire Police helped cement his expertise in working with diverse groups, a skill he applies today when conducting risk assessments and ensuring compliance across different projects within CMG.
Consulting and Compliance: Advising the Licensing Sector
Following his role in law enforcement, Mick entered the consultancy field, offering services to clients in the licensing sector. His knowledge of the 2003 Licensing Act, health and safety compliance, and public security measures made him invaluable to businesses navigating regulatory landscapes. As a consultant, he was the point of contact for clients with law enforcement or local authorities, facilitating compliance with regulatory bodies. This role prepared him well for his current responsibilities.
During his consulting years, Mick worked closely with clients to ensure compliance with stringent safety standards and secure operating licences, often representing them at licensing panels. His consultative role refined his understanding of security regulations, which he upholds as a Compliance Manager.
Building Compliance Standards at CMG
Mick joined Armatus Risks Security Services Ltd in 2013 as a Compliance and Recruitment Manager, eventually moving into a broader Compliance Manager role when Armatus became part of CMG’s integrated security services portfolio. Mick’s responsibility spans multiple areas in this role, from maintaining the ISO9001 Quality Management System to overseeing internal audits, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with Security Industry Authority (SIA) regulations
His achievements at Armatus include successfully implementing the Quality Management System to ISO9001 standards, which has become a hallmark of reliability within the organisation. By establishing such systems, Mick has helped enhance operational efficiency and regulatory compliance, ensuring that CMG’s services consistently meet industry standards.
Today, as part of CMG, Mick’s role as Compliance Manager entails a broad spectrum of compliance responsibilities across multiple subsidiaries, ensuring a cohesive security and risk management approach. He continues to work alongside key partners and team members to uphold health and safety standards, oversee internal investigations, and conduct risk assessments tailored to client needs. His insights ensure that all operations align with best practices, fulfilling CMG’s commitment to delivering secure, quality-focused services
