What it Takes to Become an SIA Licensed Security Guard

The world of security is both challenging and rewarding, offering an avenue for individuals who want to make a difference by ensuring safety. One critical step to making your mark in this industry in the United Kingdom is to become an SIA-licensed security guard. But what does it take to earn this license?

The Importance of an SIA License

SIA stands for the Security Industry Authority, the organisation responsible for regulating the private security industry in the UK. Holding an SIA license is not merely a certificate; it’s a testament to the skills and training you have received, assuring clients of your professional standards.

Meeting the Basic Eligibility

First and foremost, you must meet specific eligibility criteria before you can apply for an SIA license. You must be at least 18 years old, have the right to work in the UK, and pass an identity and criminal record check.

The Need for Relevant Training

Once the eligibility requirements are confirmed, it’s time to dive into the specific training for security guards. Training courses are carefully crafted to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need in your day-to-day role as a security guard.

These courses typically cover areas such as roles and responsibilities, patrolling, security and emergency systems, communication, reporting and record-keeping, and dealing with incidents.

Passing the Assessment

Multiple-choice exams and a practical assessment assess the training course. It may take around six days to complete depending on the type of course. The examination process is designed to test your understanding of the course material and how well you can apply your knowledge in real-world situations.

Submitting the SIA License Application

After passing the training course, you must complete the license application on the SIA’s website. The application costs £184, and the SIA aims to process it within 25 working days, although in some cases, it can take up to six weeks.

During this stage, you must complete identity checks to satisfy parts of your SIA application. The easiest way to do this is at the Post Office, but you can also have someone with a British passport, who is not related to you, sign the back of your photo ID.

The Final Steps

The SIA will verify your identity and run a background check on your criminal record. In some instances, if you have lived abroad for six months or more, you may need to provide supporting evidence.

Once the SIA has completed all these checks and is satisfied, you will receive your SIA license in the post, valid for three years.

Embarking on the journey to becoming an SIA-licensed security guard demands dedication, commitment, and a willingness to learn. It’s a profession where every day brings new challenges, but with the proper training and attitude, it’s a role that can be truly rewarding.
